Ka'au Crater Hike - Feb 12, 2019
32 Images
I read good things about this hike so I decided to check it out when I was in Honolulu. One of the most amazing ascents I have ever done. Cool jungle scenery, technically challenging without being too unsafe, you get to hike up waterfalls, you get great views of the island, and I only saw two other hikers. The descent was rough though. I expected it was going to be really muddy, so I brought an old pair of tennis shoes I could throw away when I was done with the hike. I didn't expect it to be super steep, and so the lack of traction provided by the old shoes ended up being problematic. Lots of slipping and falling, but totally worth it.

Mindy and I went to Honolulu!

While we were there, I did the Ka'au Crater Loop Hike, and pictures from that can be found here: https://jsaxton.com/images/viewAlbum/31
Mount Saint Helens - 21 March 2020
20 Images
Perfect conditions for a spring ascent of Mount Saint Helens.

I took a panorama at the top, and I think you can see eight volcanoes in it (from left to right: Rainier, Adams, Hood, Jefferson, possibly the three sisters, and of course, Saint Helens): https://jsaxton.com/static_images/EightVolcanoDay.jpg (38MB warning)

I also took a panorama of the crater: https://jsaxton.com/static_images/MSH_crater.jpg (3MB)

Ecuador 2020: Quito - Round 1
21 Images
I spent 4 days in Quito acclimatizing. This consisted of mountain biking down Cotopaxi, climbing Rucu Pichincha twice, then taking a day off to rest before the big mountaineering trip.

Here is a panorama of Quito I took (26MB warning): https://jsaxton.com/static_images/quito.jpg

Here is another panorama of Quito I took, this time with a 200mm telephoto lens (66MB warning): https://jsaxton.com/static_images/quito_200mm.jpg

Ecuador 2020: Mountaineering
35 Images
In February of 2020 I attempted to climb three mountains with Jaime Vargas of Andean Summit Adventure:

Illiniza Norte (16,818 feet, 5,126 meters)

Cotopaxi (19,347 feet, 5,897 meters)

Chimborazo (20,548 feet, 6,263 meters)

We successfully summited the first two, but ultimately had to turn back on Chimborazo.

Ecuador 2020: Quito - Round 2
30 Images
After I finished climbing mountains, I met up with Mindy in Quito. We used Quito as a base to visit the equator, Mindo, and Otavalo.

Our hotel room had a pretty good view of El Panecillo (12 MB warning): https://jsaxton.com/static_images/el_panecillo.jpg

Ecuador 2020: Galapagos Islands
53 Images
Mindy and I spent a week in the Galapagos Islands: four days on Santa Cruz and three days on San Cristobal. Highlights included Las Grietas, snorkel trips to Pinzon and Kicker Rock, a day at La Loberia, and seeing turtles at El Chato Tortoise Reserve.

Other photos from this trip can be found here.
Ecuador 2020: Guayaquil, Cuenca, and Quilotoa
29 Images
From the Galapagos, we flew into Guayaquil and spent a night there. The next day, we took a bus to Cuenca, hung out there for a couple days, then flew to Quito. From Quito, we took a day trip to Quilotoa.

There's a great viewpoint in Cuenca, and I tried to take a panorama, but the weather wasn't great. The resulting panorama is still decent (16MB): https://jsaxton.com/static_images/cuenca.jpg

Ecuador 2020
47 Images
I started the trip by meeting up with some friends in Utah for a ski trip. From Utah, I flew down to Quito and continued my acclimatization, then tried to climb three of Ecuador's tallest mountains. I then returned to Quito, met up with Mindy, and we got to see the equator, Mindo, and Otavalo. We then spent a week in the Galapagos before returning to the mainland and visiting Guayaquil, Cuenca, and Quilotoa.

This album contains the highlights of our trip. If you're interested in seeing more pictures, I created dedicated albums for each section of the trip:

Middle Sister Summit Attempt #1 - 9/6/2020-9/7/2020
21 Images
Middle Sister is a 10,046' mountain in Central Oregon. You can take a trail about two thirds of the way up, then you can follow a ridge line to the summit from there. I attempted to summit via the North Ridge route. Unfortunately I failed to summit due to navigation failures.

It took me two additional tries to successfully summit. You can see those pictures here and here.
Middle Sister Summit Attempt #2 - 9/26/2020-9/27/2020
25 Images
This time I attempted to summit via the SE Ridge. There were a number of failures here. The striking surface on my match box was completely worn out, so I couldn't light my stove in the morning. I also ran into navigation problems again, and I turned back at about 9,000'. Even if I had managed to get higher, I heard that the last part was inaccessible without crampons, which I didn't have.

You can see pictures from my previous summit attempt here and a later summit attempt here.
Middle Sister Summit Attempt #3 - 10/3/2020-10/4/2020
34 Images
I decided to try the North Ridge again this time, and this time I was successful. I camped out above the treeline at about 7000' and finished the climb on day #2.

I was definitely overprepared for this hike. I brought mountaineering boots and crampons. 18 miles in mountaineering boots is hard. I should have brought hiking boots and microspikes. Lesson learned.

After successfully summitting, I talked to another climber in the parking lot and learned about a third route: the South Ridge. This is probably the smartest way to climb the mountain. It's the least difficult route, and you can spend the night at Camp Lake. If I ever try climbing this mountain again, I'm going to try the South Ridge.

You can check out my first two failed attempts here and here.
