Paris 2016

Not included in this gallery is a 16 image panorama of Paris I took, which can be found here (19 MB warning): https://jsaxton.com/static_images/paris_panorama.jpg

Our bags are packed and we're ready to go! We left Portland on the afternoon of July 12th and we arrived in Paris on the morning of the 13th. The sun did not set on our flight. We had a layover at the Keflavlik airport, just outside of Reykjavik. Not as cool as it sounds. Our Airbnb was located in this building in the 11th arrondissement. After dealing with some check in issues, we finally entered our apartment. Our room was tiny, but probably not that tiny by Paris standards. We stumbled upon the aptly named Utopie while wandering around outside of our airbnb. Without question, the best croissants I have ever had. Paris ruined croissants for us. Nothing in the United States compares to what you can get from a good Parisian Boulangerie. We decided to try a couple of their desserts, which were also quite good. Arc de Triomphe The Champs Elysees was super crowded! We didn't spend much time here. If you want to get something at McDonald's, you don't talk to a cashier. You walk up to a kiosk, get a ticket, then hand that ticket to the cashier once your number is called.

For the record, we didn't actually get any food here. Even McDonald's has a wide variety of fancy baked goods. There are several places along The Seine where you can train, and as far as I could tell, they are all free. Notre Dame Lots of security. I believe this was the day after the Nice attacks. Also note that the French soldiers point their guns at the ground. Luxembourg Gardens One of my favorite things about Paris were the ham, butter, and cheese sandwiches you could get for 3.50 Euro Luxembourg Gardens Luxembourg Gardens A local recommended we check out Laduree, as they regularly win awards for making the best macarons in the world. Hanging out by the Seine after eating our macarons. We decided to get dinner at this little restaurant before visiting the Eiffel Tower Mindy loved this restaurant Hanging out under the Eiffel Tower, waiting for our elevator to head up. The views from the top were incredible I tried to get really sharp long exposure photographs, but unfortunately the safety railing was vibrating a little bit, causing most of the pictures to turn out poorly. This one turned out okay -- downtown Paris at dusk Eiffel Tower selfie The next day we visited Sacre Coeur. The Eiffel Tower from the top of the Sacre Coeur. Obligatory stop at Cafe des 2 Moulins (where much of Amelie was filmed) Obligatory stop at Cafe des 2 Moulins (where much of Amelie was filmed) Paris had self-cleaning bathrooms all over the city. Seems like a great idea, but some of Paris' classier residents insisted upon defecating in the bathroom, but not in the toilet. This is why we can't have nice things. Heading to the train station Off to Nice!
