Rome 2016

Not included in this gallery is a panorama of Rome I took, which can be found here (18 MB warning): https://jsaxton.com/static_images/rome.jpg

This was our nicest airbnb yet! We actually used the kitchen here a couple times! I have fond memories of watching roulette on this television After arriving, we went to a well reviewed restaurant and enjoyed fresh pasta. Amazing! There were ridiculously exquisite sculptures like this all over Rome. I have no idea what the backstory behind this one is, but it looks cool. Rome was pretty touristy and crowded Apparently Italian soldiers don't have to take gun safety classes. We stayed near the Piazza Navona In some parts of Rome, you see ridiculous things like this every couple blocks without explanation. It's crazy. There are some ruins in the middle of Rome that tourists are not allowed to enter. As such, a large population of cats has decided to live there. I highly recommend the Porchetta sandwich -- several different types of pork cooked together on good bread. That's it. So simple. So delicious. European breakfasts are way too small for me, so I broke down and bought some eggs, which aren't refrigerated in Europe. Mindy and I enjoyed a meat and cheese plate. Delicious! We went to a pizza place in Trastevere, but unfortunately they were sold out by the time we got there around 9PM. We were wandering around and found this pizza place, which still had a line, and we decided to check it out. Delicious! The Trevi Fountain While standing in the middle of the Circus Maximus, I saw two men running across shouting something at me in Italian. I eventually discovered that one of the men was a pickpocket. This dude chased down a pick pocket, roughed him up a bit, and got his stuff back. That doesn't happen in the US. He then forced the pick pocket to follow him to the other side of the Circus Maximus Where the police were waiting I'm so glad I brought my 200mm zoom lens this day. We then headed to the Colosseum, which is right in the middle of Rome It's hard to overstate how large the Colosseum is Unfortunately the selfie stick ban wasn't enforced The resemblance to modern stadiums is incredible The view from the second level Here's the view from the front row seats We then wandered to the Roman Forum I think this was a bath if I recall correctly Temple of Caesar, built upon the site of Caesar's cremation The Pantheon The Pantheon The back side of the Pantheon We found this castle while wandering around Rome at dusk The River Tiber is a dump You can see the Vatican in the background Another shot of the castle And the Vatican again We spent the next day in Trastevere Trastevere is much more laid back than the touristy parts of Rome we had previously stayed in We went to a well reviewed restaurant, but unfortunately the eggs in Mindy's carbonara were scrambled! Amateurs! We missed our bus, so we had to take a cab to the Rome train station. That was quite the cultural experience! Off to Bologna!
