The view from my hostel. Managed to find a really cheap lunch in Cusco. A fried egg on top of beef on top of rice and french fries. Good stuff. Decided to go to a fancy steakhouse and get a good alpaca steak. Super lean, but still very flavorful and tender. This laundry place overcharged me, failed to give me all my stuff back until I confronted them about it, and some of my clothes were blue from the soap they used. Lots of places sell corn and cheese. I decided to try it, but they didn't give me any cheese because I'm a gringo. Inca wall on the left, Spanish wall on the right. San Blas market San Blas also has a Coca museum! The coca museum explained, among other things, how ancient Peruvian cultures used the coca leaf. The coca museum also explained how to make cocaine. Lots of street food in Cusco. These deep fried donuts were pretty good. Peruvians love popcorn. Street vendors are all over the place selling many varieties. It's hard to tell from this picture, the the Cusco meat/potato stick thing has a lot more on it than the Arequipa variation. The following day I did a Sacred Valley tour. Pisac Market Pisac Ruins The view from the Pisac fortress After a week at high elevation close to the equator, I finally decided to buy a silly sun hat. Ollantaytambo There's a glacier a few miles away, so the Inca built granaries on this mountain to take advantage of the cold winds The bulk foods section at a Cusco grocery store A soccer game near my hostel Lomo Saltado with alpaca instead of beef The Spanish did a pretty good job of building over most of the Inca sites in Cusco. The one exception in Kusicancha. Sacsayhuaman, an Incan fortress near the top of the city No one has any idea how the Inca hauled these stones up to Sacsayhuaman. They're so big, the Spanish couldn't get them back to Cusco. A farm near Sacsayhuaman The worst thing about Cusco was the dogs. I was convinced on multiple occasions I was about to get bit, and the packs of dogs are super intimidating, especially at night. The main square This polleria was my favorite. Super juicy chicken, relatively crispy fries, amazing seasoning... I ate here three times! It's somewhat common for Peruvians to paint political logos on their homes. This is the logo for the Frente Amplio. I walked down to the main square on my last night in Cusco, and they had a free concert. Chicharrones part 2. That's giant corn in the foreground. Ayahuasca was extremely popular in Cusco.
