John Day Camping Trip - 2015

Mindy and I went camping in Central Oregon over Memorial Day weekend. While there, we visited the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.

We drove straight from Portland to the Painted Hills part of the Monument. Unfortunately, the lighting wasn't very good. We hiked up to a better viewpoint, but still poor lighting. The lighting almost got better! Mindy is still enjoying herself despite the poor lighting. Much better lighting! Obligatory selfie. Even unpainted hills look surreal in this lighting. We got some of the best views while driving out. Did I mention we got some of our best views while driving out? We camped about 10 miles south of Fossil, Oregon. The next morning we drove to Sheep Rock. The entire drive basically followed the John Day River through a canyon. There was a little museum at the Sheep Rock visitor's center. The views outside the visitor's center. We drove a couple of miles and hiked up this canyon. Hiking up the canyon. Still hiking up the canyon. Archaeologists love this canyon (and this part of Oregon in general). This was as far as we could hike in. Hiking out of the canyon. The little stream that ran through the canyon was really green. I initially thought it was due to copper deposits, but apparently it has something to do with a layer of volcanic ash. Cathedral Rock. We saw this as part of our final hike. Another rock we saw on our final hike. Driving home.
