Ka'au Crater Hike - Feb 12, 2019

I read good things about this hike so I decided to check it out when I was in Honolulu. One of the most amazing ascents I have ever done. Cool jungle scenery, technically challenging without being too unsafe, you get to hike up waterfalls, you get great views of the island, and I only saw two other hikers. The descent was rough though. I expected it was going to be really muddy, so I brought an old pair of tennis shoes I could throw away when I was done with the hike. I didn't expect it to be super steep, and so the lack of traction provided by the old shoes ended up being problematic. Lots of slipping and falling, but totally worth it.

The hike begins! The hike starts out following a river for a bit These roots were like a foot tall! After following the river for a bit, you follow an old pipe for a couple miles The trail stops, but if you follow these ropes down, you eventually descend into a little river The first waterfall! Off to the side of the waterfall are some ropes you can use to climb to the top A few minutes later you're at the second waterfall And the third waterfall The third waterfall is deceptively tall. I want to say it took at least 10 minutes to get to the top. So much fun! The view near the top of the third waterfall. Ka'au Crater The hike follows this ridge to the top of the crater, then continues around and loops back. The ridge is surprisingly steep at points. The top of the hike! The other side of the island! Once you get to the top, you realize you have to descend a super steep, muddy trail. I brought an old pair of shoes with the plan to throw them away when I was done. The problem with my plan was the shoes had no grip left. I was covered in mud so I decided to walk back to Waikiki instead of taking a Lyft. Saw some cool stuff along the way.
