Arequipa 2018

I skipped Lima and started my Peru trip in Arequipa, the second largest city in Peru. I had initially only planned on spending 4 days here, but ultimately spent 5.

Here's a panorama I took of the city (22MB): https://jsaxton.com/static_images/arequipa_panorama.jpg

The rest of my Peru pictures can be found here.

This is the first thing I saw on my flight from Lima to Arequipa. Taking a taxi to the hostel. Peruvian stoplights often have timers. Peru has over 3000 varieties of potatoes I got my first lunch here. It cost 7 soles ($2.17). Peruvian restaurants often have a set menu for lunch. You choose a soup/appetizer, then a main course. This is caldo blanco. Peruvian pork chop Public transit seems rare in Peru, but there are many privately operated Colectivos. I won 10 soles at a Peruvian slot machine You can get freshly squeezed juices at incredibly reasonable prices at the local market. Chicken and rice with caldo blanco. At night, there are street vendors grilling these little meat and potato kabobs. Amazing! Mercado San Camilo It's hard to capture the scale of the market Arequipa is called "The White City". There's some debate about whether it is due to the architecture or the complexion of the first residents. Queso helado. It's basically ice cream. Molino de Sabandia, about a 30 minute taxi ride from the main square By the time I left the mill, all the taxis had left A suburb of Arequipa was within walking distance, so I started walking I eventually ran into a taxi and headed back to town Chicharrones (fried pork belly) The Incas brought a 12 year old girl to the top of a mountain, then clubbed her over the head, killing her. This museum tries to rationalize that. Drivers in Arequipa are crazy. Drivers seem to play chicken at every intersection. This is one of two accidents I saw. Peru has a lot of Chinese immigrants, and there are quite a few chifas (Chinese restaurants) This is Lomo Saltado, a stir fry of beef, onions, tomatoes, and french fries on top of rice. I had intended to leave for Puno this day, but I couldn't find a bus, so I got to spend a bonus day in Arequipa. This is the Santa Catalina Monastery It's basically a city within a city. Nuns still live here. Lots of cool history here There are companies that will drive you up a mountain and you get to bike down I believe this is Misti Some terrain was slightly technical, some was really easy We got to bike through cool villages like this one We biked past a farm and saw alpacas Chichani in the background Misti
